Climbing the Duomo’s magnificent dome is nothing short of stepping inside a living masterpiece. Brunelleschi’s audacious engineering surrounds you at every turn—the spiral staircases feel like secret passages from another century. As you ascend, you come face-to-face with Vasari’s enormous fresco of the Last Judgment, so close you can study the brushstrokes and the drama of the figures. The higher you go, the thicker the air of anticipation becomes. Then, suddenly, you emerge onto the terrace at the very top, and Florence unfurls before you: a quilt of terracotta roofs, cobbled lanes, and the shimmering Arno River winding through history itself. The view is dizzying, humbling, unforgettable.

Amazing experience climbing the Duomo! We had a fantastic time with this company on our climb up the Duomo. The artwork inside the dome was absolutely stunning—such intricate and beautiful details that made the experience feel truly special. The church itself is massive and breathtaking, both inside and out. The view from the top was epic—definitely worth the climb! While there are a lot of stairs, they weren’t as tough as we expected. That said, I can imagine it would be much more challenging in hot weather, so we were glad to have booked the earliest time slot. It was cool, quiet, and there was few crowds, which made everything smooth and enjoyable. Highly recommend this experience if you're visiting Florence!

Where Renaissance genius meets the sacred heart of Florence

Step inside the Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral and you’re walking into a 15th-century marvel that still dominates the city skyline. Your visit begins in the vast Gothic nave, bathed in soft light from intricate stained-glass windows.

Gazing up at the crown jewel

The space draws your gaze upward to Brunelleschi’s groundbreaking dome, an engineering feat that changed architecture forever.

Pause and reflect

Allow 30–60 minutes to explore the interior, from the marble floor patterns to the frescoed Last Judgment that spirals across the dome’s interior. Stand before the high altar, admire the marble pulpit, and feel centuries of history in the air.

More than free entry

Entry is free, but the real treasures, like the climb up the Dome or Giotto’s Bell Tower, require tickets. Guided tours add rich stories about its construction, art, and the Medici legacy, while skip-the-line access helps you avoid the long queues that form in peak season.

Visitor tips

  • Start at the Opera del Duomo Museum to see original façade sculptures, the dome’s engineering model, and Ghiberti’s Gates of Paradise; it makes the Cathedral instantly more meaningful.
  • Climb Brunelleschi’s Dome at 8:15 am for quieter stairs and more time beneath Vasari’s vast Last Judgement.
  • Avoid doing the Dome and Giotto’s Tower climbs back-to-back, both are 400+ steps with no elevator; leave a few hours in between.
  • For the best dome views, go early morning or after 5 pm; midday light (12–3 pm) creates glare and harsh shadows.
  • For a quiet photo spot, head to the Cathedral’s north façade near Porta della Mandorla for a clean upward dome shot in late-afternoon light.
