Uffizi Gallery and Vasari Corridor | Walk the Medici mile

Step into the heart of Renaissance Florence at the Uffizi Gallery, home to Botticelli, Michelangelo, Leonardo, and more. Then unlock one of the city’s most elusive treasures: the Vasari Corridor. This elevated passageway, once reserved for Medici nobility, was designed to connect the Palazzo Vecchio, Florence’s seat of government, with the Pitti Palace, the family’s private residence. This passes through the Uffizi building and over the Ponte Vecchio. It links the Uffizi directly to the Pitti Palace, and is now open to the public after 8 years of restoration. Don’t miss your chance to experience both icons with one expertly guided ticket.

Note: The Vasari Corridor can only be accessed in combination with an Uffizi Gallery ticket. There are no standalone tickets to enter this passage.

Where is the Vasari Corridor?

Brief history of the Vasari Corridor

Vasari Corridor arches with view of Florence buildings in the background.

Commissioned by Duke Cosimo I de’ Medici in 1565, the Vasari Corridor was designed by Giorgio Vasari. Spanning nearly a kilometer, it winds its way through the Uffizi Gallery, over the Ponte Vecchio, and above the streets of Florence, completely hidden from the public eye.

The corridor served a very practical purpose: it allowed the ruling Medici to move freely and safely between their workplace and home, away from potential enemies or political unrest.

Today, after an 8-year restoration, it has reopened, allowing visitors to walk the very path once reserved for Florence’s most powerful family.

Plan smart: Things to know before your visit

The Uffizi Gallery sees upward of 8k+ visitors during peak season, while traffic inside the Vasari Corridor is more controlled. Only 25 visitors are allowed inside at a time. For a comfortable experience, consider visiting as soon as the gallery opens to get ahead of the crowd.

The Vasari Corridor is accessible to visitors with reduced mobility, including those using personal wheelchairs or walkers, provided the total weight doesn’t exceed 230 kg or the length 120 cm. Courtesy wheelchairs and walkers are available free of charge at Door 1 (subject to availability), and can be used upon presenting your Corridor ticket. These must be returned to the Gallery staff escorting your group at the end of the visit.

Where exactly does the Vasari Corridor start and end?

The Corridor begins inside the Uffizi Gallery near the first-floor terrace and ends at the Ammannati Courtyard inside the Pitti Palace, passing over the Arno and through the heart of historic Florence.

Can I re-enter the Uffizi after exiting through the Corridor?

No, once you exit the Uffizi via the Corridor, re-entry is not permitted. It’s best to explore the full gallery first before heading into the Corridor.

What will I see inside the Vasari Corridor?

Expect a fascinating collection of 17th–18th century artworks, panoramic views over the Arno, and a rare look at Florence from the Medici’s secret aerial passageway.

Does the Corridor visit include the Boboli Gardens or Pitti Palace?

Most combo tickets only include the Uffizi Gallery and the Vasari Corridor. Even though the corridor ends at the Pitti Palace, you’ll need to book a separate ticket to explore the palace. Same goes for the Boboli gardens — you’ll need a separate ticket to tour it.

Is a guided tour necessary to walk the Vasari Corridor?

Not at all. You can explore it on your own with timed-entry tickets. That said, a guided experience offers rich context, history, and stories you’d likely miss on your own.

Are there restrooms along the Vasari Corridor route?

No, there are no restrooms inside the Corridor itself. Be sure to use the facilities inside the Uffizi before your entry slot.

Can I bring a stroller or large bag through the Corridor?

No. Due to space and security regulations, strollers, large bags, and backpacks are not permitted in the Corridor. There are storage areas in the Uffizi where you can leave your belongings.

Are photos allowed inside the Vasari Corridor?

Yes, non-flash photography is allowed. You’ll want to capture the panoramic views and the rarely-seen interior angles of Florence.

Will I be able to see the Ponte Vecchio from inside?

Yes! One of the highlights of walking the Corridor is crossing directly above the Ponte Vecchio and viewing its famous goldsmith shops from above.

Is the Corridor climate-controlled?

Yes, it is fully air-conditioned, making it a pleasant experience even during Florence’s summer heat or rainy season.
